TOTNES NONCLASSICAL READY FOR THE TICK OFF
Totnes Nonclassical, an exciting new musical venture, is due to launch itself at The Barrelhouse on Friday January 31st with the ticking of one hundred metronomes. Poem Symphonique, composed in 1962, is a musical work by the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti which consists of setting off a hundred metronomes and letting them run down. Totnes Music Now, which is organising the event, is appealing for metronomes. If you have a mechanical metronome (not a digital one) we will be most grateful.
Nonclassical is an idea pioneered in London as a club night with a real difference. It is the brainchild of composer Gabriel Prokofiev, and now runs monthly at the Macbeth in Hoxton, East London, as well as at venues in Paris, Berlin and Exeter.Classical music, with an emphasis on new music, is interleaved with innovative DJ setsin a radical redrawing of the rules and boundaries both of classical music performance and club nights. As the Nonclassical website says: “Classical music can be part of everyone’s lives and this night is part of rediscovering its relevance.”
After taking part in Exeter Nonclassical and meeting Gabriel Prokofiev, Lona Kozik and Sam Richards of Totnes Music Now felt it was a “must” for Totnes. Now that TMN is fully behind it, the plan is to promote a few events each year, with the main emphasis on new music.
For the launch night the programme will include music by Stockhausen, Lona Kozik and others, with items of electroacoustic music by Lucinda Guy and from TMN member Richard Gonski’s extensive Digital Music Archives, plus the Ligeti metronomes piece. DJ sets will be provided by NwandoEbizie of Nonclassical who will be travelling from London for the event.
The event ticks off at 8.00 at the Barrelhouse, Totnes High Street. Entry is £8, reduced to £5 for anyone with a metronome. Anyone who can offer a metronome for the day should contact Sam Richards at firstname.lastname@example.org
